Women of the Bible: Resource for Reporters *Biblical Women

Famous, Infamous, and Nameless, Biblical women helped to shape history. Their stories have been passed down for generations. Some women were godly. Others were rebellious. Yet they all lived, loved and, left their mark. Were they really so different from women today? We can learn much from studying them.

Headlines

Enterprising reporters from Biblical days who sought front page by-lines had a wealth of material from which to choose. Here is a brief sampling.

FORBIDDEN FRUIT LEADS TO EXPULSION FROM GARDEN OF EDEN (Eve)
WOMAN GIVES BIRTH AT AGE 90 (Sarai/Sarah)
WIFE ORDERS HAIRCUT. HUSBAND LOSES STRENGTH (Delilah)
PHARAOH'S DAUGHTER RESCUES CHILD FROM NILE
WOMAN FOLLOWS MOTHER-IN-LAW (Ruth)

BABY BORN IN STABLE. NO ROOM AT INN (Mary)
UNKNOWN WOMAN TOUCHES JESUS' ROBE. HEALING FOLLOWS.
SISTERS MOURN BROTHER'S DEATH. JESUS RESURRECTS. (Mary & Martha)
PILATE IGNORES WIFE'S DREAM. WASHES HANDS OF JESUS' DEATH
JESUS ORDERS PERSON WITHOUT SIN TO CAST THE FIRST  STONE.

WOMEN OF THE BIBLE: Fifty Character Sketches  allowed me to step into the shoes of those who played the roles into which they had been cast and experience what they did.

A plus was being able to choose images and symbols representative of the persons and times to include as chapter heading illustrations: a challenge and a joy. One of my favorites closely resembles my conception of what Mary may well have looked like.

Chapter heading illustration,

I hope you will enjoy meeting these sisters from the past as much as I did.

Writing tip.

If you wish to bring characters, real or imaginary, alive, try to "become" them. Know their lifestyles, their personalities, their families, friends, and enemies. When they are faced with dilemmas, ask yourself how you would feel and act in those situations. Chances are, your characters will feel and react accordingly.

this has been corrected.
